The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

I suppose a lot of people are seeing this film around about now. It’s (predictably) breaking box office records, and there’s a reason for that: it’s fun.

I’m not going to do a lengthy review/analysis here: I don’t have the time, and I’m sure it’s already been done somewhere else and much better too.

Let me just say that I enjoyed this film, even if it probably could have been 1.5 hours shorter. There was a lot of superfluous (and some non-canonical) material injected into the story to pad it out. None of it was boring or unenjoyable in my opinion, it was just…not necessary.

Despite its bloated frame, it’s another delightful trip into Peter Jackson’s vision of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth, and that alone is worth the price of admission.
